STS081-715-069 Storm Bay, Hobart, Tasmania January 1997
Storm Bay, an arm of the Pacific Ocean, and the capital city of Tasmania, Hobart (upper center) can be seen in this northwest-looking view. Hobart, with a population exceeding 50000, is located on the banks of the river Derwent 12 miles (20 km) from its mouth. The city is the industrial and commercial center of the island of Tasmania and has a modern deep-water port. The city is blocked from expanding on either side of the river by rugged, forested mountains (darker features). Agricultural lands (lighter colored areas) are visible to the east of the city (upper right). The Tasman Peninsula can be seen near the bottom center of the image. Numerous beaches (highly reflective white-colored areas) are discernible scattered along the many coastlines visible on the image.
