much of the central Alps, from the southeast corner of Lake Con-
stance at the northern boundary between Switzerland and Austria
(lower right corner) to the smog-filled Po River Valley. The
large lake on the southeast (Italian) side of the Alps (to the
left) is Lake of the Garden. The haze obscures views of Lake Mag-
giore and Como, to the right (west) of the Lake of the Garden.
Smog trapped up against the southern Alps is a fairly typical
scene in late summer and fall.
