Image Caption: Atacama dust rising onto high Central Andean plain

The most prominent atmospheric feature on this photo -- apart from the unbroken cloud deck over lowland Argentina (forground), -- is smoke from Lascar Volcano. Above and to the right of the source of the smoke plume lies a more diffuse mass of dust starting north of region of the world's largest open-pit copper mine in northern Chile and extending up onto the high plains of the Central Andes.
