Image Caption: Ship wakes in the clouds off the California
coast. In the 1970s these were known as anomalous cloud lines. The
scientists at the time didn't know what they were. Since
then we have learned that they are related to ships that are
traveling under the right kind of cloud conditions. However
there are studies currently going on to determine what
creates the lines. It may be gasses from the stack or
particles stirred up in the wake of the ship. The study is
also trying to determine what type of cloud conditions are
conducive to leaving a cloud trail. They are using the
shuttle photography to get details of the clouds which they
can not get from the weather satellites.
