Image Caption: The dry desert climate of the high Altiplano of the South american Andes (27.0S, 68.5W) presents a stark landscape of lava flows from many extinct volcanoes and salars (dry lakebeds). Wind streaks across the surface are the result of strong prevailing WNW winds picking up fine particles of salt and volcanic ash, transporting it eastward. The small lakes in some of the basins have different colors because of varying salinity and algae activity.
