Image Caption:
The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River and the Kaibab Plateau and
National Forest, Arizona. [Orientation of the photo? Its Geocar-
to caption says the river Rflows from the top to the bottom of
this image.S Kam>Kim tells me the top of this photo is roughly
NNE. So far as I can tell, the Colorado River flows thru the
Grand Canyon from right to left in this orientation.>M.F.] The
Grand Canyon dwarfs its human habitation in the national park on
the south rim (in the very center of the photo, pointed to by the
road from the south [Rand an airfield parallel to the road on the
rightS?]). The immensity of this greatest canyon on Earth amazes
the modern visitor just as it amazed early explorers of the Amer-
ican West. Owing to the uplift of the 6500-foot Colorado Pla-
teau, the Colorado River excavated the 4500-foot deep canyon in
less than 4JmillionJyears, a small fraction of geologic time.
The STS-34 astronauts used their new vantage point on this old
wonder to take overlapping photographs that allow stereoscopic
reconstruction of the entire length [Can we specify how long the
stretch is across this photo?] of the Grand Canyon . The center-
point of this scene is 36.0! N, 112.0!JW. NASA Photograph
STS034-72-056, taken with a Hasselblad, 250-mm lens, and Kodak
5017 film. (Stereo series is frames 052 through 057.) [Cf. -055
