S43-151-141 - Mouths of the Amazon
The Amazon River brings huge amounts of sediment to the Atlantic
Ocean. Here, turbid brown water is flowing through the multiple
outlets of the great river 100 miles or more miles offshore, be-
fore it is swept northwestwardward by oceanic currents. The estu-
ary in the middle distance is the Baia de Marajo; the city of
Belem, Para State is centered on the south bank. Note the charac-
teristic "fair-weather cumulus" pattern of low clouds over land,

Huge sediment loads from the interior of the country flow through the Mouths of the Amazon River, Brazil (0.5S, 50.0W). The river current carries hundreds of tons of sediment through the multiple outlets of the great river over 100 miles from shore before it is carried northward by oceanic currents. The characteristic "fair weather cumulus" pattern of low clouds over the land but not over water may be observed in this scene.
