Image Caption: STS085-707-011 Salt Lake City, Utah August 1997
Located in the Salt Lake Valley, Salt Lake City, site of the 2002 Winter Olympics, stands out in this east-southeast-looking low-oblique view. The Salt Lake Valley extends 22 miles (35 km) east to west, 25 miles (20 km) north to south and is bordered on the east by the Wasatch ("Mountains of many waters") Range, on the west by the Oquirrh ("Shining Mount") Mountains, and on the northwest by Great Salt Lake. Salt Lake City is a major processing center for the products of an irrigated farm region that is also rich in minerals such as silver, lead, and copper. Tourism, with numerous ski resorts located within an hour's drive, is also a major industry. Salt Lake City was founded in the year 1847 by Brigham Young and is the world headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
