STS066-154-076 New York City Metropolitan Area, New York November 1994 The largest metropolitan area in the United States and one of the largest in the world, the New York City Metropolitan area (center of image) can be seen in this north-looking view. To the left (west) of New York City, the eastern linear, folded Appalachian Mountains in northwestern New Jersey are visible. South of New York City, Sandy Hook and the coastal areas of eastern New Jersey are discernible. The Atlantic Ocean covers the whole lower portion of the image. Western Long Island and Long Island Sound Cover the upper right quadrant of the image. The sediment-laden Hudson River is visible extending northward from near the center of the image to near the upper center of the image. New York City has the largest port in the United States and is one of the leading ports in the world. The city is a major trade center and the leading financial center of the entire world. New York City is the seat of the United Nations. |
