Image Caption: STS61A-034-019 Buffalo and Niagara Falls The waters of Lake Erie
(left-hand side of the photograph) empty via the Niagara River into
Lake Ontario (top of the image). The Niagara River splits around the
large island of Grand Island, and rejoins just above Niagara Falls
(1). Below the falls, the river narrows and deepens, and passes over a
stretch of rapids before reaching the calm waters of Lake Ontario.
South of Niagara Falls and east of Lake Erie is the city of Buffalo.
The linear between the two lakes west of the Niagara River is the
Welland Canal. T580A
