Image Caption: The Kaibab Plateau (1) is clearly outlined by green forests of
the moister high country between 1850 and 2850 m (6000' - 9250').
In response to the thousands of feet of vertical uplift which the
Plateau represents, the Colorado River (2) has cut downwards to
gourge out the Grand Canyon, a geologically young feature. Sur-
rounding, lower areas are semi- arid and aird: streaks of blow-
ing sand can be seen top right (aligned with arrows). The road
(3) joins Flagstaff to the Hopi Buttes and Navajo Reservation,
Canyon rim tourist resorts and the remote parts of northern Ar-
izona and southern Utah.
