Image Caption: This view from space shows the entire greater Houston/Galveston region in remarkable detail and clarity. The dark north-south line in the water between Houston and Galveston is the Houston Ship Channel. The Space Shuttle imagery captures fast-changing features, like the suspended sediment, which can be used to map current flows in the bay, and the longer-term shoreline changes. For example, since this photo was taken, Redfish Island, the small curved island along the ship channel, has been eroded away. The interaction of industrialized populations with the fragile wetlands on which they depend for food is a subject for study in Earth system science. NASA's Johnson Space Center, and Mission Control, is located on the north shore of Clear Lake west of the channel. The extensive road and highway network can be seen in great detail.
