Image Caption: This 1984 Shuttle photo shows the black plume of an oil well fire in the desert of Kuwait. Seven years later, humans' devastating effect on their planet would be felt when this area of the world erupted into the Persian Gulf War. By the end of the war, more than 600 oil wells were burning out of control! This view shows Kuwait City and the Tigris River flowing into the Persian Gulf.
