Image Caption: Perth, the state capitol of Western Australia, is the only large city in the state with a population (1990) of more than 800,000. Wheat, cattle, wool, timber, wine, oil and minerals are shipped from the port of Freemantle, downstream from Perth at the mouth of the Swan River estuary. The Swan, like the other streams that head in the Darling uplift, works its way westward through the Darling fault escarpment en route to the Indian Ocean.
