Image Caption: Western Australia. View SSE from south of Shark Bay through the southwestern corner of the continent. Perth is arrayed along the Swan River estuary, midway down the coast. South of Perth old beach ridges and shorelines, now emergent, can be seen. The sharp, south-trending boundary between the forested block (on the left; east) and the grassier country (right; west) is a fault that has juxtaposed Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks with younger Mesozoic sedimentary strata. The topographically higher block receives a little more rain, is covered by well-drained sandy soil, and supports more substantial vegetation.
