Perth is arrayed along the Swan River estuary, midway down the coast. South of Perth old beach ridges and shorelines, now emergent, can be seen. The sharp, south-trending boundary between the forested block (on the left; east) and the grassier country (right; west) is a fault that has juxtaposed Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks with younger Mesozoic sedimentary strata. The topographically higher block receives a little more rain, is covered by well-drained sandy soil, and supports more substantial vegetation.
