Image Caption: Afar region (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti) -- the junction of the Red Sea, Ethiopian and Gulf of Aden rifts. The NNW-trending faults of the Red Sea system and NE-trending faults of the Ethiopian rift lie at angles of ~120 degrees to those of the Gulf of Aden complex (the direction of view for this photograph). This rift-rift-rift triple junction, and the active volcanism in the region, reflect stretching of the Earth's crust above a rising plume of hot mantle material -- the Afar plume.
