Image Caption: STS078-760-005 Appalachian Mountains, Virginia, USA June 1996
The color infrared image helps to accentuate the parallel ridge and valley province of the folded Appalachian Mountains in west central Virginia. Most of the picture shows a densely wooded (red colors represent green vegetation) landscape. The city of Covington (bright spot in center of picture) is located along Interstate Highway 64. Lake Moomaw (dark, serpentine-shaped feature) is north of the Covington area. The Greenbrier River, located in West Virginia, is the thin, dark, meandering feature visible in the northwest corner of the image. The lighter color in the valleys indicates that some of the land is used for agriculture.
