is beginning to reach the northern basin of Lake Chad. This is the
first evidence from Shuttle photography that water has reached the
vast north basin, although it is known that the lake has been slowly
filling oiver the last few seasons. Populations moved onto the lake
floor of the north basin when lake levels fell after the last
highstand of the lake in the 1970's.
