Image Caption: STS068-260-008 Clear Lake, California, U.S.A. October 1994
Clear Lake, the largest body of fresh water wholly within the state of California, is prominent in this near-vertical photograph. A popular recreation area offering excellent fishing, Clear Lake is located 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of San Francisco. The lake is approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) long and varies in width from 1 to 10 miles (2 to 16 kilometers). The forest-covered Coast Mountains surround the lake and rise to a height of 4000 feet (1200 meters). Lakeport, the major city on the lake, is situated on the west shore.
