Image Caption: STS058-088-052 Missouri River and Carrollton, Missouri, U.S.A. October 1993
Apparent in this near-vertical photograph are the east-flowing Missouri River and scars of the spring and early summer floods of 1993. The bluffs on either side of the Missouri River rise 100 to 200 feet (32 to 63 meters) above the scoured, sandy landscape in the floodplain, which formerly contained numerous agriculture field patterns. This area of Missouri is rich in livestock production and farming. East-west-oriented Interstate Highway 70 (right center to upper left) traverses south of the Missouri River, and Carrollton (barely discernible) lies north of the river.
