S48-82-44 - Falkland Islands, South Atlantic Ocean
During STS-48 the Falkland Islands were free of clouds, so that
they could be photographed for the first time during the American
manned program. The view is to the northwest, with West Falkland
toward the observer, separated from East Falkland Island by Falk-
land Sound. Atmospheric haze has reduced the detail, but
nevertheless, the capital, Port Stanley, shows as a light-colored
dot on one of the northeastern prongs of the East Island.
