S48-151-249 - Queensland Coast, Northeastern Australia
Timbered foothills of the Great Dividing Range (dark brown areas)
separate the semi-arid interior of Queensland, Australia from the
farmed coastal plain. Forest conversion to pasture and agricul-
ture along stream valleys shows as light-toned parcels nibbling
into the closed-capopy forest. Offshore, islands along the Great
Barrier Reef chain show as yellow-brown (subareal) or light green
(submarine) sand spits capping individual reefs and banks. The
sand banks are concentrated along the southern sides of the reef
mounds, indicating a dominant southerly, alongshore wind direc-
tion.
Along the coast of Queensland, Australia (18.0S, 147.5E), timbered foothills of the Great Dividing Range separate the semi-arid interior of Queensland from the farmlands of the coastal plains. Prominent cleared areas in the forest indicate deforestation for farm and pasture lands. Offshore, islands and the Great Barrier Reef display sand banks along the southern sides of the structures indicating a dominant southerly wind and current direction.
