STS047-78-099 NAPLES and VESUVIUS, Italy. The city of Naples
lies between two promontories on the west side of Italy. The
volcano Vesuvius is more prominent from low Earth orbit immedi-
ately to the south of the city. Lava and ash from an eruption in
79 AD covered the Roman city of Pompeii on the slopes of Vesu-
vius. The larger island is Ischia and the smaller Capri.
