S43-96-96 - Aswan Dam, Egypt

The Aswan Dam can be seen clearly in this near-vertical photo-
graph. The dam, completed in 1971 formed Lake Nasser to provide
power and to regulate the historically uneven flow of Nile River
water. Regulation of the water has allowed Egypt to survive the
droughts that have plagued the rest of Sahelian Africa during the
past two decades. The contrast between largely base rock desert
east of the Nile, sand-covered desert west of the Nile, and the
ancient irrigated floodplain downstream from the damsite is well
shown. Hasselblad camera, 250mm lens, 8 August 1991, 7:13 GMT
