Timbered foothills of the Great Dividing Range (dark green areas)
separate the semi-arid interior of Queensland, Australia from the
Coral Sea and the northern reaches of the Great Barrier Reef.
While most streams from the highland flow west, some flow east-
ward, transporting sediment into various estuaries and bays.
Offshore, a portion of the river-borne sediment appears to have
been deposited adjacent to many of the small coral banks of the
reef system. Extensive recent forest conversion to pasture and
agriculture along stream valleys shows as light-toned parcels
nibbling into the closed-capopy forest. Offshore, islands along
the Great Barrier Reef chain show as yellow-brown sand spits cap-
ping individual reefs and banks. Linhof camera, 90mm lens, 8 Au-

Cairns and Townsville area, on the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia (17.0S, 146.0E) is one of the best sport diving localities in the world where divers can explore the rich and varied flora and fauna of the nearby Great Barrier Reef. Onshore, the timbered foothills of the Great Dividing Range, seen as dark green areas, separate the semi arid interior of Queensland.
