STS042-85-096 Swiss Alps Rhone River Valley, Switzerland, and the
Alps The Rhone River flows into Lake Geneva in western Switzer-
land. The sharp change in the valleyUs orientation is a feature
of this view. [Why does it make this sharp turn?] Several times
during cold periods of the Earth's history (the geologically re-
cent Ice Ages of the last 1.5 million years or so), this valley
has been filled with ice flowing off the mountain ranges. Ice
erosion has widened and lowered the valley. The surrounding
mountain chains include the highest peak in Europe, Mont Blanc
(15 781 feet) on the French-Italian border, and the well-known
Matterhorn (14J130 feet) on the Swiss-Italian border. Ice-
sculpting has generated the characteristically sharp ridges and
pointed peaks of the Alps.
