Image Caption:
STS042-72-087: Mt. Pinatubo, Philippines Mt. Pinatubo
erupted unexpectedly and violently in June 1991. This photograph
looks west over central Luzon and centers on the summit caldera
of Pinatubo but also includes the large ash-covered area around
the mountainUs flanks. All of the stream drainages are wide and
clogged with ash and other volcanic debris. This perspective
shows well the proximity of the volcano to establishments like
Clark Air Force Base, marked by the runways at the foot of the
mountains.
