Image Caption:
S39-89-53 San Francisco Bay. The city of San Francisco is anoth-
er major metropolitan area captured on color-infrared film.
This photograph is especially clear and detailed. As with New
York, the gray areas are urban regions, and red areas are
vegetated. Within the city of San Francisco, parks like Golden
Gate park and the Presidio at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge
easily stand out from the well-developed parts of the city. Ma-
jor thoroughfares and bridges (Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge
which was damaged in the October 1989 earthquake, even Market
Street in downtown San Francisco) are seen, as are other land-
marks like Candlestick Park and Alcatraz. The trace of the San
Andreas faults shows as a straight valley running northerly along
the San Francisco Peninsula. Also note the details of the turbid
waters in the Bay.

This cloud free color infrared view of San Francisco and Bay Area, CA (38.0N, 122.5W) is unusual because the city is normally concealed from view by clouds and fog. Gray tones represent urban areas and the red toned areas are vegetated. Within the city, parks easily stand out from the well-developed parts of the city as enclaves of color. The trace of the San Andreas fault shows as a straight valley running across the San Francisco peninsula.
