Trichadesmium blooms, white filamentous features on the ocean
surface, along the north coast of Australia (12.2!S, 137.0!E).
Every astronaut crew that has had the opportunity to view the
northern coasts of Australia (north of 22!S) between the months
of September and December has photographed similar features -- in
the Coral Sea, along the northern coast, and in the Indian Ocean.
Trichadesmium is important in the ocean carbon cycle because the
cells, unlike most other phytoplankton species, are capable of
utilizing elemental nitrogen as a nutrient. As such, photographs
such as this indicating the occurrence and location of Tri-
chadesmium blooms around Australia are of growing interest to
researchers involved not only in the ocean carbon budget, but in
the global carbon budget as well. (Photo ID: STS38-073-106)
