S37-94-055 This spectacular north looking oblique view of
the numerous smoke plumes from the oil well fires set off during
the Gulf War in Kuwait was photographed by the STS-37 Crew in
April, 1991. The large plumes from the burning wells are seen
spreading to the west over the Nafud and Syrian Deserts from east
and northeast winds. Smoke from the burning wells can be seen as
far south as Al Jubayl and Ras Tannurah on the Arabian Gulf Coast
near the center of the photograph. Also visible to the south of
Ras Tannurah, is the city of Dhahran Saudi Arabia, the island
country of Bahrain, and the country of Qatar. Near the top right
of the photograph is the Tigris/Euphrates River Delta, the city
of Al Basrah in Iraq, and the historic Tigris/Euphrates River
Valley.of Iraq and Iran The country of Kuwait and Kuwait City is
nearly all engulfed from smoke because of the burning wells.
