S37-86-62 Lake Natron, East African Rift Valley
The African Rift system, extending from the southern tip of the
Red Sea to south of the Zambezi river (10N to 15S) marks the very
slow extension and rifting of the East African continent
This scene centrs on Lake Natron (in northern Tanzania) just west
of Kilimanjaro (off the slide). The lake often has a pinkish
color due to algae growth in the Lake. the lake is also famous
for it's flamingo population.
A few notable features in the scene:
First, the north-south trending linears on both sides of the
lake. These are fault scarps resulting from the east-west
stretching of Africa. The barren rift valley contains many vol-
canoes, and one can be seen on both the northern and southern
tips of the lake. The southern volcano, Oldoinyo Lengai is the
world's only active carbonatite volcano: the lavas erupted are
primarily NaCO3, while most of the other volcanoes erupt Mg- and
Fe- rich silicate magmas. The Na from the volcano is easily
dissolved in groundwater, and fed into Lake Natron (hence the
name!!!)...resulting in very briny water in the lake. Because
this shallow lake sits in an isolated drainage basin, the water
level in the lake, and the concentration of soda fluctuates
greatly. Just to the south west of the scene (and just off the
lower left corner) is Olduvai Gorge, the well-known site contain-
ing early hominid fossils.
