Image Caption:
Note the topographic controls on vegetation. Forest growth ap-
pears to have well defined lower (1) and upper (2) elevation lim-
its moderated by climate differences between the coasts. The low
Atlantic coastal lands and valleys do not have sufficient precip-
itation to support forests. The slopes of hills which receive
snowfall are forested, but above a certain elevation, climates
are too harsh. Along the Pacific coast, tree line extends down
to sea level. The result is a curious striped look of forested
and non-forested land. (S36-152-50)
