A low oblique of most of the southern portion of the Tigris-Euphrates River Basin of Iraq. Several plumes rise on the plains between the Baghdad (between lakes, top) and the head of the Persian Gulf. Trajectories are typically southeast, towards the Gulf, as shown here. Smaller smoke plumes rise from the marsh country (center). Smoke is usually whiter than dust. Kuwait lies bottom left; Iran is to the right. Dust storms in the Persian Gulf region have been documented during many Space Shuttle missions.
