Image Caption: STS034-076-067 Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas, U.S.A. October 1989
This southeast-looking photograph of west-central Arkansas features the low, folded Ouachita Mountains and their generally east-west aligned valleys and ridgelines. The pockmarked landscape is the result of selective clear-cutting. Several lakes and reservoirs are apparent--large Lake Ouachita (near center) northwest of Hot Springs; Lake Hamilton south of Hot Springs; De Gray Lake, south of Lake Hamilton and closer to Interstate Highway 30, the thin, linear feature that roughly parallels the top of the photograph; and dark Lake Maumelle (upper left corner) northwest of Little Rock, the capital city (barely discernible). A small section of the Arkansas River Valley is visible (lower left corner).
