El Chichon volcano, Mexico (S31-91-069). The landscape surround-
ing El Chichon volcano is still scarred from the 1982 eruption,
and the damage is highlighted by vegetation gradients seen on
color infrared film. The reddish areas of the surrounding moun-
tains indicate heavy vegetation (woodlands) which once covered El
Chichon. The gray-greenish area in the immediate vicinity of El
Chichon was damaged and recovering from the 1982 eruption.
