Lake Eyre, Australia (S31-79-84). Just prior to the STS-31 mis-
sion, south central and eastern Australia received large amounts
of rainfall. Eastern Australia (Queensland, New South Wales and
Victoria) experienced one of the worst floods of the century,
with loss of life and much agricultural and property damage
(Weekly Climate Bulletin, 90/16). Press reports indicated that
an estimated 570,000 sq km was under water. Although eastern
Australia was not illuminated for the Discovery crew when they
were awake, the heavy rainfalls were widespread enough, and run-
off was sufficient to flood some of the interior dry lakes. The
STS-31 crew was able to photographs Lake Eyre with some water in
it. This is a 250 mm photograph of Lake Eyre.
