Edge of dust storm, Mali (S31-152-OFN). This is a nadir view of
the edge of the large dust storm over Mali (27 April, 1990). The
southern edge of the dust storm is very distinct, clearly tur-
bulent, and graphically shows how the dust obscures surface
features. By comparing this photo with environmental satellite
imagery obtained at the same time, some estimates of the varying
vertical extent of the dust could be determined. The storm was
tracked from the start of the STS-31 mission.
In this view of the southern Sahara Desert in Mali, Africa (16.5N, 3.0W), unusually strong surface winds accompanied by an unstable atmosphere produced a large area of blowing sand over western Africa. Between 26 and 29 April, observers in the area noted a dense cloud of sand appeared from out of central Mali and migrated offshore of the African coast near Guinea. Satellite measurements of the extent of the storm was 270, 000 square miles.
