Image Caption: STS031-151-113 Southeast US Smog Event

This otherwise unexciting view near the terminator was especially
interesting to atmospheric scientists: it reveals the extent of a vast
smog event for which much point- specific data had been collected, but
for which a synoptic view had never been encountered.

In this north-looking view, the US southeast coast can be seen (bottom
right), as can the ridges of the Appalachians (center) protruding in
places above the smog. Contrails can be seen clustered around the
south end of the Appalachians along the line of the terminato

In this oblique view of the Georgia and South Carolina coast, the southern most Appalachians (32.0N, 83.0W) dominate the foreground. Contrails criss cross over Atlanta, a major airline hub. The coastal plain which wraps around the southern Appalachians, is well delineated. Faintly visible under the haze toward Earth's limb are the Great lakes (Lake Michigan near center), the folded belts of the central Appalachians and Long Island, New York.
