Image Caption: A view of the space shuttle high above the central Philippine Islands of Samar, Masbate, Biliran, Leyte, Pananon, Cebu and Bohol (11.5N, 125.0E). These islands, and the entire archipelago, are undergoing rapid tropical rain forest clearing for intensive land use to support a growing population (over 61 Million) resulting in soil erosion and loss of productivity. These still active volcanic islands experience frequent earthquakes and volcanoes.
