STS026-35-048 - Typical patterns of reservoir development pro-
jects in formerly forested areas of South America. This is a
portion of the Ro Caroni Project (7! N, 63! W) in Venezuela.
The large block deforestation along the river is probably for
development of rangeland. The deforestation and erosion patterns
(complete vegetation removal over large areas with downstream wa-
ter siltation) are reminiscent of the
deforestation/desertification cycle seen in more advanced stages
in Madagascar, East Africa, and Brazil: land clearing, initial
fertility, erosion and soil compaction, lithification or lateri-
zation, abandonment.
