Image Caption: STS009-45-2095 Virunga Volcanic Field The two westernmost volcanoes in
the Virunga volcanic field are located just north of Lake Kivu (1).
Mt. Nyiragongo (2) has a deep crater with a lava lake in the bottom. A
fresh lava flow (3), that formed in 1980, destroyed the vegetation in
its path on the northeast slope of Mt. Nyamuragira. T29
