Image Caption: Southern California has perhaps the highest density of automobiles in the world. The effect can be seen in the photo showing a thick cloud of smog, more than 100 miles across, drifting over the Pacific coastline. Seen in the photo are Los Angeles and Long Beach (center coastline), San Diego (lower coastline), and Santa Catalina Island.
