Image Caption: ISS006-E-50419 (2003) --- This digital still camera image of Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout, North Carolina, with a Soyuz vehicle docked to the orbital outpost in the foreground was taken by Expedition 6 crewmember Don Pettit during his 5 1/2 month stay on the International Space Station (ISS). The largest inland body of water is Pamlico Sound. Kitty Hawk, on North Carolina's Outer Banks is also visible. On Dec. 17, 2003, the world celebrates a century of human flight with the anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk. The brothers used the Outer Banks' prevailing winds and a 90-foot hill (Kill Devil Hill) to successfully demonstrate powered flight.
