Image Caption:
STS091-713-061 Sunglint on the ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia. Many sets of internal waves are seen traveling through this area. There are even sets that are running perpendicular to each other.Internal waves are tidally induced and travel below the surface of the ocean along a density change which occurs often around 150 feet deep. We can see them because as the wave action smooths out the smaller waves on the surface it changes the way the sun is reflected.
