STS084-706-080 Payun Volcano and Peaks, Argentina May 1997 The snow-covered Payun Volcano is located in the Andes foothills of Patagonia and is an extinct shield volcano. Its elevation is 12073 feet (3682 meters). The last known eruption of the Payun volcanic area took place between 300,000 to 500,000 years ago. Lava flows can be seen to the west of the volcano midway between the center and top center of the image. |
