Photo #: NM22-725-57 Date: Oct. 1996 Geographic Region: USA-ARIZONA Feature: TUCSON, OPEN PIT MINES |
NM22-725-057 Tucson, Arizona USA Fall-Winter 1996 The large, angular-looking, light-colored patterns near the center of the image are extensive mine dump and tailing sites of the open pit copper mines south of Tucson. These copper mines are located on the eastern flank of Sierreta Mountains. Some gridded, street pattern in the desert city of Tucson can be seen near the bottom center (north, center) part of the image. Notice that there are a series of drainage features in a distributary pattern along the eastern side of the Santa Cruz River, south of Tucson. The Tucson Mountains are located immediately west of Tucson. A limited number of cultivated fields are visible in the Santa Cruz River floodplain, especially northwest of Tucson. |
