STS059-086-030 Canyon Ferry Lake, Missouri River, Elkhorn Mountains, Montana, U.S.A. April 1994
Featured in this southwest-looking, low-oblique photograph are Canyon Ferry Lake; the rugged, snow-covered Big Belt Mountains to the east; the snow-covered Elkhorn Mountains to the west; and the northern portion of the Pioneer Mountains to the southwest. The Missouri River is barely discernible as it traverses north to south, ending near Three Forks (not discernible). The mountains in this part of Montana are known for their rich mineral deposits, including gold and silver mined in the late 1880s and early 1900s.
