BIOMASS BURNING, Page 2

STS046-86-047: This remarkable photograph gives us a view of over 500 km of central African landscape. Sunglint accents Lake Bangweulu in Zambia and part of the Lupaula River. The most striking feature is the smoke plumes showing the intensity of biomass burning in the tropical woodland and grassland biomes.

STS066-94-020: Lake Chad in Africa lies mainly in the Republic of Chad and partly in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger. The size of the lake varies seasonally and in this photograph all the water appears to be located in the south basin. Agriculture burning occurs in both basins and the prevailing wind direction is from the east.

STS051-98-036: This view shows only a small portion of the biomass burning that marked the Earth photographs taken over Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina during this mission in September of 1993. Numerous point source fires are visible, in this late dry season scene, in the areas between the Parana and Uruguay Rivers. Most of this burning is probably associated with agricultural preparations.
