Moscow, Russia

NM21-724-038

Wide view north to Moscow (near center of field), on to the White Sea at the top. The landuse pattern shows the patches of forest (dark) and agricultural land (white).

Chicago, detailed view (250 mm lens)

NM21-766-065 New York City

The Mir 21 film includes some of the best views ever taken by astronauts of the world's great cities. A crystal clear day over New York City provided Shannon Lucid an opportunity to view millions of people enjoying their Fourth of July weekend. Central Park in Manhattan stands out as the long, dark rectangle in the middle of the image. Ships in the middle of New York harbor show up as small white dots.

NM21-741-048

Lake Ontario, Lake Erie (far right), Niagara River, and Erie Canal in sunglint.

NM21-771-007 Chernobyl, Ukraine

The Chernobyl power plant sits on the Pripyat River just north of Kiev. The large lake in the center is a reservoir on the Dniepr; Kiev is off the field of view at the bottom. The bright region toward the upper left is part of the Chernobyl power plant infrastructure constructed after the 1986 accident. The cooling pond can also be seen. Russian and Ukrainian scientists are monitoring the growth of the vegetation surrounding the power plant and contrasting forest health with data from other parts of the country not proximal to the high doses of radiation.

NM21-765-084

San Francisco and San Francisco Bay -- detailed view of the city. The Golden Gate bridge is obscured by clouds, but the Bay Bridge can be seen. Oakland is on the east side of the bay.

NM21-765-083

San Jose and the southern part of San Francisco Bay. The brightly colored areas in the bay are salt farms.

NM22-727-019 San Francisco Bay Area

The wide view from the Mir captures the regional structures around San Francisco Bay, including the city of San Francisco, Tomales Bay and Pt. Reyes. The San Andreas fault passes seaward of the Golden Gate and continues northward to create Tomales Bay.
