Over the past few decades, large changes have occurred in and around Houston and Galveston Bay. Most obvious is the urban and suburban development. This, in turn, changes the rates and locations of fresh water runoff into the bay. Dredging in Galveston Bay and the construction of the Texas CityDike have changed the current patterns (and erosion/depositional patterns) in the bay. Subsidence has changed the shoreline and nearshore ecosystems. Effects of many of these changes can be seen in the photographs by mapping patterns both on land and in the water. The ship channel and new suburban developments around NASA - Clear Lake are visible. (STS055-71-040)
